A Night of Connection
and Reflection

This past Monday, Sulam had the privilege of hosting a truly special event at the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum in DC. At this intimate gathering, we celebrated the past and future of Sulam and inclusion education—and the Greater Washington Jewish community as a whole—as Sulam became a part of the museum’s collection.

While the event was limited in size, its spirit and message resonate with the broader mission that Sulam embodies every day: to ensure every Jewish child, regardless of learning differences, has a place to thrive within our community.

“Today, I am a junior in high school, and I’ve come a long way. I am proud of the things I have accomplished and the challenges I have overcome. I couldn’t have done this without the support of Sulam—and my mom.”

— Mitchell Lederman, Sulam student at Berman

It was an evening filled with meaningful conversations, new connections, and a collective commitment to inclusive education. Fittingly, it took place during JDAIM—Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month.

“Today, an increasing number of families are turning to Jewish day schools as a safe and welcoming place. And the only path to entering a Jewish Day School for some children is through Sulam.”

— Lianne Heller, Executive Director of Sulam

Our Executive Director Lianne Heller shared compelling words about the importance of creating environments where every student can succeed. A parent and a student provided touching testimonials on the transformative impact of Sulam's programs. And our Board President closed the evening with a powerful reflection on how struggle can lead to growth.

“The eternal nation does not fear a long journey.”

— Judah Lifschitz, President of the Board of Sulam (quoting a Hebrew saying)

It was not just a celebration of what we have achieved, but also a forward-looking gathering that set the stage for the impactful work we continue to undertake.

“When I ask Avi what about his day was so great, he says: Because I’m in a Jewish school.”

— Dena Feldman, parent of Sulam@JDS student

In these times of challenge, Sulam stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the strength of our community. We are reminded that it is together, united in purpose and action, that we can make the most significant difference.

To those who could join us, your presence was deeply appreciated. To the entire Sulam community, we invite you to engage with us further. Whether through participating in our programs, or simply learning more about our mission, there is a place for everyone in this vital cause.

Thank you for keeping Sulam strong.
