Sulam Program Strands
Supplemental
Criteria for Placement:
- Documentation of a condition that negatively impacts learning or a
documented disability
- Clear skill-based deficit in an academic or social/emotional area
- On or near grade level in skills
- Referral from MJBHA for Sulam support
- Interest from a parent for Sulam support
Programming may include:
- Related services as indicated on FEP, i.e. (These services are provided
by private practitioners who have been hired as consultants by the Sulam
program. These services are paid separately)
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech and Language
- Physical Therapy
- Case management
- Psychological counseling
- Maximum of 2 Sulam classes &/or individualized services (support,
tutoring, or indirect services)
Grades determined primarily by MJBHA staff with collaboration from Sulam
staff.
Mainstream With Supports
Criteria for Placement:
- Documented disability
- Student skill level enables him/her to participate in general education
class for the majority of the school day with support from Sulam staff
- Student may attend one or two Sulam classes
Programming may include:
- Related services as indicated on FEP (See note above regarding payment
and options for services)
- Case management
- Psychological counseling
- Placement in general education classroom for minimum of half of academic
courses with or without Sulam Supports (direct and/or indirect) i.e.,
- Modification of curriculum and course work
- Sulam Mainstream Prep course or Sulam classes up to 2 periods
- Pre-teaching and/or review class built into schedule
Grades determined by collaboration between MJBHA and Sulam staff
Mainstream with 1:1 Adjunct Support
Determining Criteria for Placement:
- Documented disability
- Student skill levels and behaviors enable him/her to participate in
general education class for the entire day with 1:1 support
Programming may include:
- Related services as indicated on FEP (See note above regarding payment
and options for services)
- Case management
- Psychological counseling
- Minimal adapted and accommodated curriculum
- Intensive monitoring, cuing, prompting, and/or directing for entire
school day
Grades determined by collaboration between MJBHA and Sulam staff.
Modified Self-contained
Determining Criteria for Placement:
- Documented disability
- Student skill level are significantly below grade level
- Student attends Sulam classes for a majority of academic school day
- Mainstreaming when & where appropriate i.e. specials, science and
social studies
Programming may include:
- Related services as indicated on FEP (See note above regarding payment
and options for services)
- Case management
- Psychological counseling
- Sulam classes offer adapted & accommodated curriculum that follows
the scope & sequence of the Maryland Voluntary Curriculum
- Placement in mainstream for no more than two academic courses as determined
by multidisciplinary team.
- Mainstream prep course will be included in student’s schedule
as appropriate
- Mainstreaming in special subjects
Grades determined primarily by Sulam staff.
Modified Self-contained with 1:1 Adjunct Support
Criteria for Placement
- Documented disability
- Identifiable behaviors that impact the student’s and other individual’s
safety and/or ability to learn thereby requiring 1:1 support.
- Behaviors of concern may include:
- Non-compliance or oppositional behavior (i.e. refusal or inability
to follow directions)
- Atypical behaviors (i.e. hitting head on table, significant communication/language
processing deficits, perseverative behaviors)
- Impulsivity (i.e. running away, hitting others)
- Disruptive behaviors
- Extreme learning deficits
- Extreme inattention
Grades determined primarily by Sulam staff &, when appropriate,
in collaboration with MJBHA staff.
